Google Ads Display and YouTube Placement Exclusions: Stop Wasting Budget on Bad Placements

Google's automatic placement selection optimizes for reach, not conversion quality. A guide to finding poor-performing placements, building exclusion lists, and managing mobile app placements that generate clicks but no conversions.

When you run Google Display Network or YouTube campaigns, your ads appear on third-party websites and channels that Google deems relevant to your targeting. Google's placement selection is optimized for reach and relevance — not for brand safety, conversion quality, or efficient budget use. Without active placement exclusion management, a meaningful percentage of your Display and YouTube budget lands on placements that generate clicks but no conversions, or on placements inappropriate for your brand.

How to find poor-performing placements. In your Display or Video campaign, navigate to Placements → Where ads showed. This shows every individual placement that has received impressions or clicks. Sort by clicks descending, then filter for placements with 50+ clicks and zero conversions. These are your immediate exclusion candidates. For mobile app placements specifically, filter the report for 'Mobile app category' — app placements in GDN typically have the worst conversion rates and highest click fraud risk in Display campaigns.

Mobile app placement exclusions. Mobile app placements are a significant source of wasted Display spend. Accidental clicks from game apps, children's apps, and low-quality utility apps generate click volume with near-zero purchase intent. Google provides managed placement exclusion lists for 'Games' and 'Mobile apps' categories that can be applied at the account or campaign level. For most B2B and considered-purchase B2C campaigns, excluding all mobile app categories in Display is the default-right decision until you have specific evidence that app placements convert for your account.

YouTube channel exclusions. For YouTube campaigns, you can exclude specific channels and video placements. Common exclusion targets: channels with audiences dramatically younger than your target (children's content, student educational content), political or controversial channels where brand adjacency creates reputational risk, and channels with extremely low subscriber counts where your ad consumes a disproportionate share of available impressions without meaningful reach benefit.

Placement exclusion lists at the account level. Google Ads allows account-level placement exclusion lists that apply across all campaigns automatically. Building a master exclusion list — populated over time as you identify poor-performing or brand-unsafe placements — prevents the same placement problems from recurring in new campaigns without requiring you to re-exclude the same placements every time you create a new Display or Video campaign.

Content category exclusions. Beyond individual placement exclusions, campaign-level content category exclusions allow you to exclude entire content types: parked domains (zero-value traffic), error pages, in-game placements, and sexually suggestive content. These category exclusions serve as a first-line filter before individual placement review. Most accounts should have parked domains and in-game placements excluded by default from Display campaigns.

Placement exclusions in Performance Max. PMAX campaigns aggregate impressions across Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, and Shopping — and PMAX does not support campaign-level placement exclusions through the standard interface. Account-level placement exclusion lists apply to PMAX. This is a significant brand safety limitation: you cannot easily control where PMAX ads appear in Display and YouTube inventory without global account-level exclusions that affect all campaigns.

Building exclusions proactively vs. reactively. There are two approaches: reactive (review the placement report monthly and exclude poor performers after they've spent budget) and proactive (apply standard exclusion categories at campaign launch to reduce initial wasted spend). The proactive approach requires knowing which categories are reliably low-quality for your industry — app placements, parked domains, in-game ads — and excluding them before the first dollar is spent.

The review cadence. New placements enter your campaigns daily as Google discovers new relevant sites and channels. Monthly placement report review — identifying new poor-performing or brand-unsafe placements and adding them to your exclusion list — prevents accumulation of wasted spend without requiring daily monitoring. Set a recurring calendar reminder; this task produces consistent value but is easy to defer.
